DUTIES PERFORMED ADMINISTRATIVELY

Governance and Financial Management: Provided support to best utilize the talents and resources of the Board, stimulate involvement, recruit new members, and work closely with the Board to ensure strong fiscal health and effective governance of the organization. Initiated and maintained effective communications, including the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board and its committees.

Attended staff meetings and meetings of the Board of Directors and of its committees as requested; ensured that minutes of all meetings were properly recorded and filed. Regularly prepared and presented reports for the Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings and for any other committee meetings as requested/needed. Assisted in Board Member prospect identification, cultivation and recruitment. Additional duties: to orient, educate and engage Board members to maximize their participation and overall effectiveness. To celebrate the successes of individual Board members and the Board as a whole, to call attention to their contribution of time and resources as community ambassadors for the Charlotte Philharmonic Society. Other duties: to maintain fiscal responsibility for overall budget and ensure the most effective use of financial resources. Oversee management of cash flow and present appropriate balance sheets, income statements, and other financial tools for Board review. To work closely with financial auditors for annual audit reports and assist Board committees to implement their goals and objectives and name appropriate staff liaisons to work closely with committees. Oversee grant and contract applications and activities.

Institutional Advancement: Identify stakeholders, develop strategies, and define how key messages will be delivered to various individuals and institutions to maximize visibility, brand, and earned and combined revenues of the CPO. Pursued an active role in the organization’s development programs, planned giving, annual operating efforts and identify appropriate funding opportunities from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies with the Board of Directors and staff. Lead staff and Board in development activities, maintained strong relationships with the funding community, and developed the most effective donor stewardship and cultivation methods with Board and staff. Developed marketing and public relations programs with staff support that achieved earned income goals from subscription and single ticket sales while enhancing the Philharmonic Orchestra’s visibility and reputation. Ensured the highest levels of customer service, effective audience interaction, and community engagement. Coordinated fund raising activities, including: Annual Fund Drive, corporate sponsorships, special events, and planned giving programs. Ensured that all contribution and other funding support sources were acknowledged as may be required by law and as otherwise appropriate. Served as a liaison to the Philharmonic Guild and other entities to ensure effective communication and advocacy. Monitored legislative activity that affected the orchestra and recommended appropriate action to the Board of Directors.

Operational Management and Strategic Planning: In this area, duties included to oversee short-term operational and long-range strategic planning and implementation processes. Additional duties included mentoring and supervision of the organization’s human resources, mobilization of technological resources, and the decision making as it relates to the appropriate use of fiscal resources. Monitored the long-term institutional plan and vision in coordination with the Board and staff. Assisted in the creation of a strategic operating plan and assumed joint responsibility with the Board for its implementation, reporting progress towards goals regularly. Consulted and strategized with the staff regarding the annual artistic, educational, and outreach plans and appropriate budget, which fulfills the organization’s artistic vision and simultaneously maximized earned income opportunities. Worked with legal counsel and Board to oversee and negotiate contractual matters with the musicians, guest artists, vendors and strategic partners. Developed a strategy to effectively mobilize and utilize volunteers in support of the orchestra and its programs. Directed administrative personnel relations to ensure that the organization is effectively structured and staffed with competent employees. Moehring hired, evaluated, supervised, and terminated when necessary, all administrative personnel of the organization. Additionally, he negotiated and executed concert hall leases, rented other concert space as required and secured rental equipment, licenses, and permits as needed for performances. Mr. Moehring also negotiated and executed contracts for the orchestra, guest artists and guest conductors as well as other contracts as needed, including any administrative services rendered. Albert Moehring assisted the Board in the development and implementation of a Master Plan for the orchestra and its operation, including rehearsal schedules, local and run-out concerts, outreach programs, special events, broadcasts and audience development. He developed and implemented a marketing plan for growing the subscriber base and to increase individual performance attendance, and building the general capital funds; directly managed any outside vendor relationships as related to this area.

Community and Public Relations: Guided the public image and increased brand awareness of the organization, clearly articulating its mission, vision, programs and impact, and acted as a key spokesperson for the Philharmonic. Developed partnership agreements with music, performing, and community organizations to advance the Philharmonic’s outreach activities and collaborative partnerships throughout the region. In tandem with the Board, communicated the work and artistic mission of the organization to the public through the media and at public speaking engagements as requested/needed. Extensive experience with radio and television media/appearances both live and pre-recorded. Cultivated solid, quality relations with the city leaders and key contacts throughout North Carolina, other arts organizations, public agencies, and the media. Regularly sought out opportunities for organization exposure and publicity, including partnering with other non-profit entities, sponsors, individuals, corporations, and city contacts to create innovative and appealing performances and arts-related promotions.

Vendor Relations: Communicated with prospective and current vendors to ensure up to date and most appropriate service offerings; evaluated bids, costs, and projected outcomes of vendor offerings and selects vendors accordingly. Regularly managed the vendor list for company and adds/subtracts vendors as needed.

 Independent Audio and Television Producer

  • Music Director/Conductor: Conduct rehearsal & performances, select concert repertoire, develop innovative programs and guest artists. Motivate musicians to a higher artistic standard.
  • Artistic Development: Community arts leader, provide artistic vision and leadership of the orchestra. Select concert repertoire, create and develop interesting programs, serve as the orchestra’s spokesperson in public speaking, the press, radio and television appearances. Develop long range artistic planning.
  • Education and Community Outreach: Participate and work closely with marketing department in audience development/community engagement, foster positive relationships among public and private schools, post-secondary institutions, and the community music schools. Work with government leaders, foundations and other arts/non-profit organizations; stay current with the latest trends, innovations in orchestras and related activities.
  • Orchestra Management: Schedule all performance and rehearsal dates, audition orchestra members, new and current, contract with per service musicians and select/audition guest artists. Coordinate all disciplinary action, oversee and direct orchestra personnel, potential donors, and others capable of influencing future success of the organizations finances. Oversee music library and librarian.
  • Fund Raising: Develop and create fund raising events and budgets, document and create manuals for these events, participate in fund raising/outreach, develop community and donor support.
  • Board Relations: Report directly to the Chairman and the Board of Directors. Provide information necessary to establish policies and strategic plans for the continuing development of the orchestra, the annual budget, space/equipment needs. Work with Board in planning and implementing fund-raising activities, present special opportunities such as tours, outdoor programs, special performances, television specials and community/educational outreach programs.

  • Awards & Recognition: Twice awarded City of Charlotte Proclamation for artistic contribution to Charlotte (1993 & 2004), Nomination for Ovation Award (National Television), 2000 Spirit Award (Charlotte, NC), Christmas Wonderland was submitted for an Emmy Award, Voted “Charlotte’s Best” Charlotte Magazine, Somewhere in Time CD submitted for Grammy Award.
  • Independent Producer of Audio and Television Recordings: Produced 6 musical television specials for the Public Broadcasting Service. Programs aired in 44 states, Canada and Mexico reaching over 95 million households. Produced with the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra 13 CD recordings of classical and popular music, distributed to a worldwide market.
  • Skills: Excellent musicianship, conducting skills, able to convey passion for music to both orchestra and audience. Ability to inspire and communicate musically and verbally with audiences of all ages, both on and off the stage. Broad and extensive knowledge of repertoire; classical, opera, pops, Broadway, seasonal, and motion picture scores. Possess uncompromising musical standards that result in the orchestra’s optimal performance, proven record of building/developing orchestra and audiences.
